Audition Information

2008 – 2009

Town Hall Theatre is dedicated to inspiring personal growth in young people and creating shared performing arts experiences for families. By selecting professionally-trained artists committed to sharing their craft, seeking out fresh new plays that speak directly to young people, and continually offering a wide-range of performance opportunities, workshops, classes and community outreach programming, the theatre encourages a nurturing, creative environment in which an arts dialogue between adults and children can begin.

Audition Guidelines

RULES TO LIVE BY

The grade requirements must be met as of the first day of rehearsal. The most recently completed grade is used to determine eligibilty.

All auditionees must bring a headshot or photo. Resumes are recommended but not required.

Auditionees must prepare a one-minte memorized monologue. For musicals, please also prepare a one-minute selection from a Broadway-style song and bring either the ap propriate sheet music or an instrumental CD/cassette. An accompanist will be provided. Singing a cappella or alongside of a recorded voice is strongly discouraged. For help selecting audition material, contact the Education Director.

Callbacks are generally scheduled within 7 days of general auditions.

There is an instructional fee for children currently enrolled in grades 2-12 cast in any production at THT. These fees include a cast t-shirt and show poster and are not due at the time of the audition, but must be paid prior to the first rehearsal. Fees are:

  • $130 for All Children's Theatre and Landmark Children’s Theatre Company Productions
  • $80 for ACT Touring Teens productions.

All Children's Theatre

"ALL CAST" SHOWS

The All Children’s Theatre (A.C.T.) casts all participants who complete an audition*. Of course, the theatre still conducts callbacks to determine what part each child receives, but the sting of not being cast at all is removed! The theatre will often double-cast these productions to accommodate the number of children auditioning.

*The theatre reserves the right not to cast auditionees who have excessive conflicts (see conflict policy) and/or have had recent disciplinary problems.

Acting One

BUILDING CHARACTER ON STAGE

Completion of our core introductory skills class, Acting One is a prerequisite for being cast in any Town Hall Theatre production for all children in grades 2 - 7. This policy insures that everyone in a THT production not only shares the same basic theatre vocabulary and knowledge, but also understands the responsibilities of an actor from rehearsal to performance. Our goal is for every child to have a rewarding experience rehearsing/performing a show, much of which is dependant on knowing what is expected of them as a performer.

Performance Instructors

TRAINING YOUNG ACTORS

The theatre casts professionally-trained adult performance instructors for each of the Landmark Children’s Theatre Company productions. In addition to performing featured roles in each show, performance instructions serve as mentors; leading daily warm-up exercises, running lines and reviewing blocking with young performers. They also teach a series of actor development workshops. These sessions focus on core disciplines such as voice, movement and characterization, as well as teaching show-specific topics such as stage combat, specialty make-up and puppetry.

General Adult Auditions

Each season, Town Hall Theatre holds general auditions to fill volunteer adult roles and performance instructor positions in all scheduled Landmark Children's Theatre Company productions. As part of this process, the theatre also attends the League of Cincinnati Theatres' annual unified auditions. To audition, candidates must prepare EITHER

  • Two (2) Contrasting One- Minute Monologues; OR
  • One (1) One-Minute Monologue and one (1) One-Minute Selection from a Broadway Song.
